Autism diagnosis?

Can anyone tell me where to go to have an autistic spectrum disorder diagnosed? Our 9 year old has been having temper tantrums and problems at school and his teacher has suggested that we bring him to a Psychologist. Has anyone any recommendations , where do we start and are there any specialist services out there who can help us?

Firstly I know it must be a difficult time for you now. I have worked in the field of intellectual disabilities, mostly those with behavioural problems. but I can assure you, the worst is not knowing! Your first step is to go to your gp. They will discuss things such as symptoms, possible triggers such as diet, something happening in your sons life, external factors etc. They are then able to refer you to a specialist or point you in the right direction of services available. I am sure your sons teacher is just trying to help, and I realise that generally teachers are over worked and under paid, but she was wrong to just palm you off to a psychologist. Your school should also have external resources to help point you in the right direction. Good luck, and please let me know how you get on!
